Subtle Fall Stovetop Simmer

Simmering spices on the stove can get really strong, really fast. My husband doesn’t care for it unless it’s subtle, so I created a recipe that’s fragrance is mild, fresh and cozy. I always have the ingredients on hand because I try to save squeezed lemons from my water every day, and any of the kid’s orange peels. They easily store in a bag in the fridge. For this subtle simmer blend, add citrus peels (orange, lemon, grapefruit) to a couple cups of water, sprinkle in a few cloves and a stick or two of cinnamon. That’s it! It’ll create fragrance after about 15 minutes of boiling and will last for hours. Add water as needed and simmer as long as you like! To incorporate fall art in your home, purchasing original, one-of-a-kind pieces from a local artist is ideal, but often a seasonal budget may not allow for that. In that case, I recommend getting a print. Prints still capture the original beauty of a piece while supporting an individual artist. Some artists even embellish their prints to make them feel more original. This option is much more affordable than investing in a unique piece. You can order them printed and/or framed, but some prints can even be ordered as a digital download. Hello convenience! If you go the downloadable route, I recommend you have it printed with a high-quality printer through a print shop to get the best finished look. Remember, displaying things that set the tone for fall doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as swapping out family photos to display pumpkin patch memories or moments you captured last year trick-or-treating with friends. Simply displaying past fall memories is fun and will warm your heart just as much as, (if not more), than a cozy fall painting or print. Ok… let’s talk about this casserole. I know, I know, you’re either a casserole person or you’re not. Growing up in the south, casseroles were way overdone. Way! This delicious Broccoli Cheddar Chicken and Rice just so happens to be cooked in a casserole dish! Trust me, don’t skip it. It’s put together by the fabulous Half Baked Harvest and is a modern take on a classic. I suppose there’s not much about it that makes it “fall”, it just feels cozy to me, so I included it.

If you’re needing a fall-inspired side dish, these Roasted Carrots with Candied Pecans and Goat Cheese by Inspired by Charm are so bomb! My husband does not care for cooked carrots ever, but I’ve taken them to friend’s homes several times and they’re always a hit! They not only look beautiful (especially if you can find rainbow carrots), but they’re super flavorful.

Speaking of favorites, the kids always love Monster Punch around Halloween. It’s complete trash when it comes to ingredients lol, but so fun to drink! I add a little vodka to ours when my momma is over and it’s so fun and festive.

Another delicious option is this Thanksgiving Punch by Thyme and Joy. It can be served with champagne or ginger ale, making it a great option for kids and adults alike. It’s not only beautifully festive, but it’s easy to throw together and everyone always loves it. I’ve served it at Friendsgiving and even at Christmas.

The last mention goes to one I’m adding to the list this year. It looks beautiful and I have a feeling will taste even better. This Vanilla Chai Old Fashioned is by Half Baked Harvest, and since I’m a fan of so many of her recipes, I’m assuming this one will also be top notch!

Whether you’re a sweet fanatic or a “savory person” like my husband, I think we can all agree that one of the most charming aspects of the changes in season, is the foods that we get to enjoy with each. In the South, the fall is also hunting season, the spring is for harvesting crawfish and serving king cake, while summer brings watermelon and fresh crabs. Our activities, our entertainment, it all revolves around food! It’s just how we live, so naturally I had to write a post about the tastes of fall. In this post I’m sharing my favorite fall sweet foods. You can read about our favorite fall savory recipes and our favorite fall drinks too!

Sweet Fall Treats

Sweets are my favorite to make and take anywhere! My first mention is of my beloved Halloween Hangover cookies. Obviously, these are made after Halloween, but it’s definitely a recipe you’ll want to hang on to until then. They’re the perfect way to use up the 3 truckloads of chocolate candy you’re already dreading, plus the dough is totally freezable and literally lasts us through Christmas! When it comes to “fall flavored” cookies, my friend Bre’s recipe is the best! It’s the simplest, most delicious cookie I’ve ever had! Seriously, three ingredients… One box of Spice Cake Mix, one can of pumpkin, one bag of dark chocolate chips! Check out her Instagram reel here for the details!

This Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake Dip by Midwest Nice Blog is one of those things you can literally whip up last minute. It always comes out great and you can dip any and everything in it. Some of our favorites are apples, celery, vanilla wafers, and cinnamon graham crackers.

This fall I’m adding this little bowl of heaven right here to my fridge! This Whipped Pumpkin Spice Butter by Tidy Mom couldn’t possibly disappoint. I recently learned to make bread in the bread maker (hello easy!), so I’m going to add a little cinnamon next time and serve alongside this deliciousness! I can’t wait to try it!

1. Fall Foliage

Harvesting fall foliage is easier than it sounds. I’m from South Louisiana and we get close to no fall-colored foliage, but I can still manage to bring the outdoors, in. I just trim a few oak branches and wait for them to die. I know, it sounds awful, but it works. They turn a beautiful honey gold and dry quite well. I used them last year, tossed them out, and am already on the hunt for more. I think I’ll use them in the basket on my front door this year. 2. Pinecones

This is a no-brainer! Pinecones are so annoying and ugly in the yard, so I bring them in and get good use out of them in the fall. In fact, I use them all winter, through Christmas and the new year. I even saw packs of pinecones in the dollar section at Target recently if you don’t have any near your home. Adding a little cinnamon oil or Autumn/Christmas blend of essential oils makes them even more appealing. Keep it simple when displaying them too! I love a wood or concrete bowl overflowing with them, a fireplace basket jam-packed or a front porch planter full. Last year I displayed them in just about every room and plan to recreate the look again this year.

Bringing pinecones in is easy but doesn’t come without a little risk. There can be a bug or two lurking inside the cone itself. Modern Homestead has a great tutorial on preparing your pinecones for use as decor.

3. Nuts in the Shell

I realize you probably don’t have edible nuts growing in your yard, but I still consider nuts in the shell to be free decor because they are so yummy and serve a dual purpose, food and fall accent in one! I always have nuts out for the family and guests year around, (usually peanuts and/or pistachios), but in the fall I use them to make more of a statement. The thought of a large bowl of fresh pecans in a wood or marble bowl gives me instant cozy vibes. I keep a smaller bowl near for cracked shells and to hold the nut crackers themselves. This is another super fun way to get creative! Nuts anyone??!

4. Seasonal Fruit

Using seasonal fruit to accent home decor is not a new concept by any means. Think lemons, limes and grapefruit in spring and melons, kiwis and pineapples in summer. However, winter fruit isn’t usually something we consider, but can be so beautiful. Pears, pomegranates, apples and small oranges are a great way to add color and dimension to your tablescape or kitchen countertop.

Additionally, pumpkins and gourds are readily available by mid-September and can add a traditional fall look to your home as well. If you’re truly wanting to get the most from your natural decor elements, opt for a “pie pumpkin” (small pumpkins often in the produce section) to add to your fruit bowl. These small pumpkins last 2-3 months indoors and only get riper over time. This means your beautiful decor turns pumpkin pie come Thanksgiving Day! Again, making it serve a dual purpose and making it virtually FREE!

5. Acorns

Calling all kiddos! Collecting acorns outside sounds absolutely miserable if I’m being honest, but kids freaking love it! I make it a competition and a counting game every year! Whoever gets the most acorns, picks the restaurant that weekend. Easy right? I guarantee you’ll end up with more acorns than you know what to do with! Using them in a small bowl or tray is such a sweet way to add a little fall to any room.

Like the pinecones, there is a small process involved when preparing your acorns for use in your home. Maria at “Staying Close to Home” does a great job breaking it down in this post.

I’m certain that between these five ideas you’ll find a way to spruce up your space using nature and free decor elements. Having a home that we’re proud of is possible on any budget. It’s achieved by paying attention to what’s around us and what’s happening in that moment, or season in time. Take advantage of the decor God has already given us. This season I’m putting all of these ideas into practice and teaching you along the way. This might seem simple, a little too simple even, but I promise these elements, done with intentionality, will make all the difference. You’ll feel drawn to your items more every year, they’ll serve your home for more than just one season, and they’ll never go out of style.

1. Color

Ok. This seems like a no-brainer… but it’s the WAY you incorporate seasonal color that creates the look you’re after. Color evokes a feeling, it’s the reason why brands and sports teams use the same color combo in all of their advertising and merchandise. Red and yellow is obviously Mickey D’s, turquoise and purple will forever be Taco Bell and purple and gold is LSU all day! When styling your home for the seasons, avoid “commercial” holiday colors. For fall this includes your typical bright orange and black. Save this predictable color palette for a little space for the kids, an autumn-themed party or fun Halloween night festivities.

There are so many naturally occurring fall colors that can easily be built into your space. Think mustard yellow, army and hunter greens, burnt orange, copper, dark brown, rich plum purple and gunmetal gray. I’ve rounded up some ideas to help get your creativity going. I use candles, books, dish towels, stems and fall art to incorporate any and/or all of the mentioned colors. Replacing summer colors and decor with these will instantly cozy up your home and make it feel a little more like fall. Promise.

2. Texture

Layering textures in your during any season is always a great idea, but it’s essential in fall and winter! I love when a room is put together using lots of various textures. This is often the “designer” element that many homeowners are missing when trying to achieve the look they see in magazines or on Pinterest. Texture is everywhere in nature. We crave it but struggle to create it. A few easy ways to achieve a textured look through fall decor is to use natural elements (more on this next week), mix materials like wood and copper, add textiles in a variety of styles (fur, knit, flannel), and to not shy away from old, well-loved pieces and vintage decor. The fall season is when most of us start feeling nostalgic about the holidays. Lean into it and express it through the coziness of your fall decor. Here are a few examples of using texture well.

3. Accents

Accenting good design with great pieces, is probably my favorite part of it all. It’s amazing what a few great pieces of decor can do for a space. When considering what items you’re putting out this year, or purchasing, consider the color and texture they bring to the space. If you’re wanting it to create a curated, intentional look, it’s simple… be intentional. Move past the idea that you have to empty your “fall” labeled bins and use everything you own! It’s ok to be choosy, in fact you should be choosy! I like to stick with a very few, limited number of items that scream “FALL” (pumpkins, etc.) and use more of the elements I mentioned earlier to change the overall mood of my home. I’m sharing some great “style moments” to help you see how it’s more about triggering a feeling of fall, and less about the actual “fall decor” you use.

Adam used a chainsaw to cut the log into 1 inch think rings. I left the bark in tact. Once they were wiped down, they were perfect for our Thanksgiving table this year.

For the centerpiece, I added pumpkins from my porch and brass candlesticks from the mantle. I only used four wood chargers, and went with a more glam look on the heads of the table. Mixing materials and layering unexpected pieces is one of my favorite ways to decorate the table. Pumpkins in non-traditional colors are both unexpected and chic. I love the way these compliment my regular home decor too.
