Transitioning our home through the seasons doesn’t have to mean a hundred trips to Hobby Lobby or buying all the neutral pumpkins at Target. Guilty! I’ve had this mindset in the past and every year I’m left feeling like I need a “few more things” to make it all come together. This last year working in clients’ actual homes (and not just scrolling Pinterest), I’ve learned what we all really want. Simplicity. Effortlessness. Practical aesthetics. Am I right? I got you.

This season I’m putting all of these ideas into practice and teaching you along the way. This might seem simple, a little too simple even, but I promise these elements, done with intentionality, will make all the difference. You’ll feel drawn to your items more every year, they’ll serve your home for more than just one season, and they’ll never go out of style.

1. Color

Ok. This seems like a no-brainer… but it’s the WAY you incorporate seasonal color that creates the look you’re after. Color evokes a feeling, it’s the reason why brands and sports teams use the same color combo in all of their advertising and merchandise. Red and yellow is obviously Mickey D’s, turquoise and purple will forever be Taco Bell and purple and gold is LSU all day! When styling your home for the seasons, avoid “commercial” holiday colors. For fall this includes your typical bright orange and black. Save this predictable color palette for a little space for the kids, an autumn-themed party or fun Halloween night festivities.

There are so many naturally occurring fall colors that can easily be built into your space. Think mustard yellow, army and hunter greens, burnt orange, copper, dark brown, rich plum purple and gunmetal gray. I’ve rounded up some ideas to help get your creativity going. I use candles, books, dish towels, stems and fall art to incorporate any and/or all of the mentioned colors. Replacing summer colors and decor with these will instantly cozy up your home and make it feel a little more like fall. Promise.

2. Texture

Layering textures in your during any season is always a great idea, but it’s essential in fall and winter! I love when a room is put together using lots of various textures. This is often the “designer” element that many homeowners are missing when trying to achieve the look they see in magazines or on Pinterest. Texture is everywhere in nature. We crave it but struggle to create it. A few easy ways to achieve a textured look through fall decor is to use natural elements (more on this next week), mix materials like wood and copper, add textiles in a variety of styles (fur, knit, flannel), and to not shy away from old, well-loved pieces and vintage decor. The fall season is when most of us start feeling nostalgic about the holidays. Lean into it and express it through the coziness of your fall decor. Here are a few examples of using texture well.

In Honor of Design

Craftberry Bush

3. Accents

Accenting good design with great pieces, is probably my favorite part of it all. It’s amazing what a few great pieces of decor can do for a space. When considering what items you’re putting out this year, or purchasing, consider the color and texture they bring to the space. If you’re wanting it to create a curated, intentional look, it’s simple… be intentional. Move past the idea that you have to empty your “fall” labeled bins and use everything you own! It’s ok to be choosy, in fact you should be choosy! I like to stick with a very few, limited number of items that scream “FALL” (pumpkins, etc.) and use more of the elements I mentioned earlier to change the overall mood of my home. I’m sharing some great “style moments” to help you see how it’s more about triggering a feeling of fall, and less about the actual “fall decor” you use.

The landing at the top of the stairs has been cluttered, unorganized and used as a “catch all” since the day we moved in! We’ve used it as toy storage, movie night spot, a workout room, and everything in between. Now that we have a new, amazing space dedicated to movie nights and video games… it was time to address the mess of the playroom loft!

We originally thought about adding wallpaper, but really couldn’t find any that worked with our budget. After scrolling Pinterest looking for inspiration, I remembered a post by “Room for Tuesday” (a blogger) I had seen a few years ago. I knew it was the look I wanted! After revisiting the post, I was officially hooked on the color-block idea for our playroom loft. Because the room has a unique ceiling that creates a visual seam, I decided it would be a perfect space to recreate the look I loved so much!

I’ve done a bit of precision painting in the past, but I knew it would be a challenge to get this one right. I used Sherwin Williams “Alabaster” on top and “Amazing Gray” on the bottom. It ended up being the perfect blend of neutrals and gave the modern lines of color-blocking, a softer, more timeless look.

If you’re wanting to try your hand at precision painting, I shared all the details and tips for how to achieve a perfectly straight line in this Instagram Story Highlight. Prepping your space using quality materials is absolutely the key to getting perfect blocking.

Once the walls were painted and the built-ins were sprayed, it was time to start planning the style features. I knew I wanted to play off of the wood tone in the existing banister, but also wanted to keep things neutral. I chose this beautiful woven light fixture to replace the ceiling fan. I love the texture it brings to the space, plus it feels whimsical and fun. It’s very budget-friendly and would look great in a lot of different areas in a home.

Choosing the wall color and the light fixture satisfied the “impact” pieces for the playroom loft. These are elements I like to choose first in a space, elements that will make the biggest impact. After those selections are made, other accents fall into place.

When choosing how to style the walls in this particular space, I had a few ideas but didn’t want to take away from the color-blocking either, so I narrowed it down to two larger scale wall elements. I created a gallery wall on one end of the room and used acrylic shelving to add an art display to the other.

If you’re wanting to create a similar look, check out all my tips for a random gallery wall here.

On a smaller wall in the room, I rehung a piece of playful art I’ve had since we first moved in 4 years ago. Before this house we had never had a playroom before, and I purchased this adorable sign when I was still dreaming of having a beautiful space to hang it in. In fact, I was inspired by the frame and colors in this piece when I chose the color palette for the rest of the room. It’s one of my favorites!

Let’s talk about acrylic. I love it… in moderation. When I was trying to think of a modern way to display the kid’s art, I came up with the idea to use nail polish shelves! That’s right, did they look familiar? Turns out, they’re the perfect depth to hold a canvas! I ordered these as a set and I’m so pleased with how they turned out. We worked hard to leave our mark on these canvases, so I’m happy with how beautifully they’re displayed.

In addition to the shelves, I also chose an acrylic chair to accent the built-in desk. I love how petite it is. The thing about acrylic is, it’s useful and functional without being visually weighted. I liked the idea of the space feeling open and airy, plus we added a beautiful new gold pull to the oversized desk drawer. Who would want to hide that with a chair?!

The organization in the space was obviously a huge detail to consider. I went with easy, affordable storage from Target. I love mixing wood tones with other natural elements like basket weave and woven cotton. Accenting with a metal is always a good idea, and small, gold accents were a perfect touch to this room.

Overall, this project took longer than expected because of item availability and weather, but it was worth the wait. Sometimes there are things out of your control when you’re working on a space, and that’s ok. Design takes time!

Ever since I was pregnant with Daisy I knew the room we were using for her nursery would one day be a tv room. “One day” is finally today!

It’s a very small room, so were prepared to use a bit of creativity to pull it together and maximize its functionality. We are thrilled with the way it turned out. I’m sharing all the diy details, photos and links below. It is, without a doubt, everyone’s new favorite spot to hang out!

We started by changing the wall color. I wanted something dark and cozy. We went with an old favorite… “Iron Ore” by Sherwin Williams; and because it is such a small room, painting was quick and easy! We also did a bit of touching up on the moulding and caulked a few cracks to make the space look fresh and crisp!

Next, we hung the TVs, yes TVs with an “S”…. two TVs! It makes sense for us because the girls (3 and 6) often want to watch a movie while Clark (10) wants to play Xbox or watch something different. The type of TVs we chose have an aux jack for headphones, so usually one of the kids wears headphones to keep the noise from the other TV out. So far, it’s worked out great!

We dropped new wire in the wall from the attic and used recessed outlets to ensure the TVs would hang flush against the wall. The universal brackets we used from Target were easy to install and worked well with the TVs we bought.

Once those were hung, we added a fun neon-look LED light above the “gaming” TV. The kids thought this was so cool! To conceal the wire, we cut a small square in the Sheetrock behind the light itself, and dropped the cord down to the new outlet behind the TV below. We used a special outlet box that easily accommodates unusually shaped and various sized wires. To make things nice and tidy, I finished this gaming area off by hot gluing the neon light-switch to the back of the TV for convenience. I’m so pleased with how great this spot turned out!

As far as TV room furniture, we kept it super simple by choosing bean bags that convert to full size beds! They’re incredible! We ordered them from Amazon, and they’re made by a company named Cordaroy’s. During the week we keep them zipped up in bean bags because they’re perfectly compact for TV watching on school afternoons. On the weekends, we unzip and lay them out to create the perfect pallets! All three kids love having weekend slumber parties all piled in the new room together!

We kept an old coffee table in the space for playing games, puzzles and coloring. The warm wood tone of this table is beautiful and was what inspired the curtain color I chose… camel! Velvet camel-colored curtains!

I asked on Instagram for guesses on the curtain color, not one person guessed correctly! I’ve always been a sucker for “gun metal gray” and “cognac leather” together. The finished TV room gives me all the right vibes!

The very last thing to be installed on the last weekend in January, was the wall art! I’m so proud of how these turned out!!! They were insanely easy to do, relatively inexpensive and add a warm, family-friendly feeling to the new room. Of all the changes and improvements we made to this space, my favorite has to be these framed photos of the kids! I’ll share all the details to create this photo poster gallery in a future post if you’re wanting to get the same look in your home.

I’m sure you’ve guessed by now that this room will get plenty of use for years to come! Not only is it cozy and amazing, but it is the first room that’s completely made-over and “new” in our “12 rooms in 12 months” project challenge!

After Christmas decor comes down, the house feels so bare don’t you think? I kinda love it, and honestly I have to force myself to not get spring fever in January! One of the ways I keep our home feeling warm and cozy for a couple more months, is by leaving out and/or adding wintry stems. I prefer not to use snow covered branches or red berries (those feel too Christmassy to me), but lots of evergreen makes things warm.

I rounded up my favorites this year and added the links below. They’re all price points, and all sizes! Hope you find something to cozy up your space this winter!

Left: The tree we found in the attic. Right: inspiration picture

With a free tree, and my inspiration pictures, I decided to take my chances and create a sparse tree from an ordinary Christmas tree. The tree we found was left by the previous owners, and was in great shape. Most of the lights were out, but we knew they would have to come off anyway. The transformation ended up surpassing my expectations and I’m so excited to share the three easy steps with you!

Step 1 Remove Lights

My husband, Adam started by cutting the plastic light clips off of each individual branch, but quickly realized that was too tedious of a process. Although extremely messy, pulling and jerking the light wires worked very well and made the process go quickly. The plastic light clips broke off very easily. I recommend you do this part outside!

Step 2 Remove Branches

Some trees have removable branches… that type of tree is ideal for this project. However, our tree did not have removable branches, they were hinged, like most trees these days.

To create a sparse look, I removed every other branch on each row all the way up the tree using bolt cutters. Once I got closer to the top, I could remove the smaller branches with tin snips. I cut as close to the trunk as possible to minimize the hardware leftover from the missing branches.

I kept the bottom row of branches intact to create a thicker look toward the bottom. It also helped to “ground” the tree and look more natural.

Step 3 Hide the Hardware

You might’ve already wondered about the look of the Christmas tree’s trunk. Obviously, this tree wasn’t made to have the trunk part seen, so it had parts that needed to be hidden, especially after removing half of the branches.

I knew that once the tree was decorated, your eye wouldn’t “see” the trunk, but it still needed to be somewhat camoflauged. I used dark brown burlap ribbon to hide the hardware and was pleased with how it turned out!

Tip: I also used the dark brown burlap ribbon to hide the light plugs once I began decorating.
Jamie

How you decorate your sparse tree is totally up to you, but I kept it really simple. I love how you can see all the ornaments and how the garland “floats” on the branches. Less is more when it comes to these types of trees.

I’d love to know if you try this with a tree in your home! Be sure to comment below or send me a message on Instagram!

Every year since Clark was born, almost 9 years ago, we have created something special as a family to record all the things we’re thankful for that year.

We’ve done “thankful trees”, “thankful pumpkins”, paper chains, etc. No matter what the craft, it’s always a special memory. While you’re here on the blog, check out our thankful tree from last year. I loved it and it was so easy and inexpensive.

Magnolia branches are new to a lot of people and have become popular recently with the “farmhouse” style home decor everywhere you turn. For southern women like me, magnolia branches have always been swoon-worthy! Not only are magnolias the state flower and native to my beloved Louisiana, they are absolutely beautiful. The large, flat, deep green leaves make any space in your home feel warm and welcoming almost instantly. There’s only one problem, real magnolia branches are hard to get your hands on!

During the holidays, I wanted a few branches to accent my Christmas greenery. After asking around and searching for cut branches around my neighborhood I came up empty-handed, and had pretty much forgotten about it as the holidays came and went. Then one evening in January, I was walking Henry (our mini-schnauzer) and stumbled across the biggest, most beautiful magnolia branch I had ever seen curbside! I tried to drag it home, but it was way too huge. My sweet husband had to go after it and haul it in the bed of his truck. It was big!

I got to work on it before the leaves dried out and I’m styling it a few ways give you some ideas in case you get your hands on a branch or two. Also, the faux branches you can find in most home decor shops are a great alternative and often look very believable.

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.
Jamie

Long and Lean

In my bathroom, I kept the branches long and went with a narrow vase (water carafe) because of the limited counter space. I love the way it looks and adds so much warmth to my bathroom!

Short and Squatty (is that a word?)

I used a short, narrow oval vase for this look. It would be perfect for a long table or bar area. Somewhere that needs to be filled, but doesn’t need too much height.

In a Pot

I absolutely love how this turned out! I’ve had this <a href="http://“>flower pot for years, and this is the best way I’ve used it. I cut the magnolia branches shorter for this look, placed a low, wide vase in it and arranged them to look full and overflowing.

Farmhouse Windowsill

I hadn’t planned to create this look, but when I had a few small leaf clusters left, I played around with a bottle set I hadn’t used in a while. I’m in love with the warmth it adds to my kitchen window! I found this little narrow basket of bottles at Home Goods last year and almost didn’t get it. I definitely recommend it now!

Leaf Place Cards

As I arranged the branches, I lost a few leaves along the way. Don’t worry I came up with a plan, you know I hate to waste! I’ll save the leaves, let them dry out and use them to create place cards next time we host a dinner at the house. I was inspired by this photo from The Lettering Studio. For this look, I’ll use a metallic paint pen.

The Grand Finale

This is the biggest arrangement I’ve ever made, ever! If you follow my Instagram stories, you know how heavy this thing is! It’s a very large a-symmetrical arrangement that would be perfect on the floor, on a very large table (with tall ceilings) or as an outdoor patio accent. I left the branches long and organic looking. The vase I used is a very large olive oil jar reproduction. I found it at Home Goods.
