The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) can be taught to children as young as 5 years old, maybe younger depending on their interest level. Memorizing scripture and prayers is so important when little ones are first understanding what it means to read and understand the Bible. You’ll be surprised at how much they understand and how well they’re able to retain the info you give them.
My oldest two children are 9 and 5 1/2. I decided we were going to take Holy Week this year to memorize the Lord’s Prayer.
I broke it into 6 parts and will take a couple of minutes each day to teach it to them, as well as explain the meaning (this is key). I’m thinking it’ll be something we can do together in the car on the way to school each morning. I’ll send them with a small slip of paper in their pocket and plan to quiz them after I pick them up!
As the week goes on, it will build. They’ll earn a prize for being able to recite it correctly each night before bed, (Probably a Hershey’s Kiss on their breakfast plate the next morning!) and by the end of the week they’ll know it!
